Planning

First Initial Team Meeting

As a way of planning and deciding what music video to choose for our coursework task, we both went away and conducted research into potential music videos taking into consideration in particular the genre of the music videos. We then met up and pitched to each other the ideas we had and discussed the ideas we each came up with for our set task.

Here is a video of our first team meeting...

 Research Into Band/Artist

Justin Timberlake is an American singer, actor and business man. He was born in January the 31st in 1981. His fame started early when he appeared as contestant on the Mickey Mouse Club on the Star Search. He became famous in the 1990s as a lead singer.
He released his solo album in 2002 called ‘Justified’ which sold more than 7 million copies worldwide. He continued his success with a second solo album Future sex/Love Sounds which is where the song ‘What goes around comes around’ was released from and is the song that we are doing for our music video. The song was a US number 1 hit in 2006. Timberlake won six Grammy awards and four Emmy awards from his first 2 albums which made him one of the most successful artists.

Justin Timberlake was a lead singer of the band called 'N Sync. The group started in 1995, its first debut album sold 11million copies.

Timberlake’s style is Pop, Dance, R&B. His songs are more about love and betrayal, sex, relationships, and life. The song that we have chosen to produce a music video to is ‘What goes around comes around’ which talks about betrayal and regret. Justin Timberlake is one of the artists that sing about love and relationships between different people. We chose to do one of his songs because many people in the audience will relate to the theme of the story because we are all surrounded by love.

Justin Timberlake was once in the boy band 'N Sync whose launch was financed by Lou Pearlman. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee. His parents divorced in 1985 and they both remarried. His mother now runs an entertainment company called Just-in Time Entertainment. Justin Timberlake grew up in Shelby Forest, a small community between Memphis and Millington. His first attempts at a singing career were country music songs on Star Search as "Justin Randall”.

Justin Timberlake appeared in Mickey Mouse club House in 1993; his cast mates included his future girlfriend Britney Spears, Christina Aguirella and many others. Timberlake and JC Chasez were the two lead singers of the popular 1990s boy band 'N Sync. The group started in 1995, started its career in 1996 in Europe.

Justin Timberlake is on Facebook and he has millions of face book friends. He was also a cast in the movie called Social Networking which was proved to be a good movie.  He is also on my space and twitter this is a way in which his fans can follow him and keep updates about his new releases and life.

*Awards & Nominations*

Overall Justin Timberlake has won a total of 29 awards and has been nominated for 69 awards in total. The awards he won include:

 - American Music Awards - he has received 3 of these awards and received 6 nominations.
 - BET Awards - he has received 1 award and 3 nominations.
 - Brit Awards - he has received 3 of these awards and 5 nominations.
 - Grammy Awards - he has received 6 (solo) of these awards and had 29 nominations.

 Influential Videos Research

Beyonce – If I Were A Boy

The narrative of the music video is basically about a man and woman who in are in a relationship together, but the man is doing the woman (Beyonce) wrong and being unfaithful. Throughout the duration of the video Beyonce is impersonating the man she is with and also alternates roles to the man she would affirm to be ‘if she was a boy’.
This music video would provide us with inspiration for our planning as the narrative is similar to the one in Justin Timberlake’s ‘What Goes Around Comes Around’. It is similar in the way that it is also primarily about a man and a woman whom in which are in a relationship with each other but someone, in this case the man, isn’t faithful. There is a certain part in the music video which stands out particularly to me, this is the part where she is confronting the man and the script flips around. Personally, I think that this was a clever element to add into the music video as it is like a little twist in the video but at the same time the audience still know exactly what is going on in the narrative. The use of the colours black and white continuously throughout this music video reflects on the relationship the couple have with each other, and reflects on the fact that they are two very different people and think differently to each other.
There are several close up shots in the music video revealing the characters facial expressions. This is an important and crucial convention to use within music videos especially when it is related to relationships, as it gives the audience an insight into the characters emotions so they can sympathise with that particular character; therefore we will be incorporating this shot type into our own music video.
The locations used within this video are

Usher - Confessions

Again this music video is very similar to the one in which we are re-making as it is to do with relationships and breakups as a man (Usher) and a woman are in a relationship together but breakup because the man was being unfaithful. There are certain aspects within the music video which would be suitable to use within our re-make. For example, the close-ups shown occasionally throughout the video of the ring on his finger which gives the impression that he has made a commitment with one of the women. The close up of the object shows that it’s important for the audience to identify that Usher is actually committed to one of the women in order for them to understand the narrative clearly and for it to flow effectively. There are a variety of close ups used in this video allowing the audience to gain an insight into his emotions and the way he is feeling about the whole situation. We will be using a range of close ups in our music video as a way getting the audience to understand clearly how the characters feel.
At the start of the video in the introduction Usher is shown in the studio writing down lyrics preparing to record his song. I think this is good because already without dialogue the audience are given an insight into his character and personality. In addition, we will use this in our music video to show that we have researched other music videos of the same genre and incorporated elements of them into our own production.

Rihanna – Unfaithful

This music video is also about relationships, as Rihanna is married to man whom in which she cheats on, therefore is ‘unfaithful’ in her relationship with her husband. This music video was made so that it could be put into perspective that it isn’t just men that cheat when it comes to relationships. There is a certain element used throughout this music video that I think would be relevant to use in ours. This is that the guy in which Rihanna is cheating on her husband with is seen in all of the scenes and locations where Rihanna is. For example, when she is at the restaurant with her husband he is there and passes her a note and he is also the one playing the piano she dances and sings around. In addition, at the beginning of the music video very quick cuts are used combined with short takes showing several clips of Rihanna and her husband together in different locations. This reflects on the amount of time they spend with each other and what kind of relationship they have with one another. This is also an element we could use in our music video.
The choice of costume and style of clothing predominantly used is smart/casual or formal black and white clothing. We will be incorporating this convention into our production of the music video by having our characters dressed this way.

R&B/Pop Conventions:

·         Men are usually topless or wearing minimal clothing at some point in their video
·         Jewellery kept to a minimum – e.g. watches, ring, earring(s)
·         Women are usually wearing minimal clothing showing stomach – attract males attention (male gaze)
·         Make – up worn is not over the top usually casual/every day look or bold/defined
·         Mainly black and white clothing – two different sides
·         Black and white effect commonly used – adds to tone of the song
·         Love songs/breakups women fully clothed, e.g. formal wear dresses – dressed in a respectful way suggesting that men should respect them as they deserve it
·         Close-ups of the artist’s face or significant object(s)
·         Two shots – showing characters relationship with each other
·         Location – natural settings, casual – e.g. restaurant, home
·         Plain backgrounds with artist alone in the room
·         Reversing roles/challenging stereotypes – woman impersonating the man – conveys message to audience
·         Props –sunglasses- sense of coolness
·         Expensive cars, jewellery etc – celebrity status
·         Narrative usually reflects or touches on something the celebrity has been through/experienced in their life

Annotation of Lyrics

Hey girl, is he everything you wanted in a man?You know I gave you the worldYou had me in the palm of your handSo why your love went awayI just can't seem to understandThought it was me and you babeMe and you until the endBut I guess I was wrongDon't want to think about itDon't want to talk about itI'm just so sick about itCan't believe it's ending this wayJust so confused about itFeeling the blues about itI just can't do without yaTell me is this fair?Is this the way it's really going down?Is this how we say goodbye?Should've known better when you came aroundThat you were gonna make me cryIt's breaking my heart to watch you run around'Cause I know that you're living a lieThat's okay baby 'cause in time you will find

What goes around, goes around, goes around

Comes all the way back around

What goes around, goes around, goes around

Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around

Now girl, I remember everything that you claimed
You said that you were moving on now
And maybe I should do the same
Funny thing about that is
I was ready to give you my name
Thought it was me and you, babe
And now, it's all just a shame
And I guess I was wrong

Don't want to think about it
Don't want to talk about it
I'm just so sick about it
Can't believe it's ending this way
Just so confused about it
Feeling the blues about it
I just can't do without ya
Can you tell me is this fair?

Is this the way it's really going down?
Is this how we say goodbye?
Should've known better when you came around (should've known better that you were gonna make me cry)
That you were going to make me cry
Now it's breaking my heart to watch you run around
'Cause I know that you're living a lie
That's okay baby 'cause in time you will find

What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around

What goes around comes around
Yeah
What goes around comes around
You should know that
What goes around comes around
Yeah
What goes around comes around
You should know that

Don't want to think about it (no)
Don't want to talk about it
I'm just so sick about it
Can't believe it's ending this way
Just so confused about it
Feeling the blues about it (yeah)
I just can't do without ya
Tell me is this fair?

Is this the way it's really going down?
Is this how we say goodbye?
Should've known better when you came around (should've known better that you were gonna make me cry)
That you were going to make me cry
Now it's breaking my heart to watch you run around
'Cause I know that you're living a lie
But that's okay baby 'cause in time you will find

What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around
What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around

This is an annotation of the, ‘What goes around comes around’ song by Justin Timberlake which was released from the debut album. This song was written by Justin Timberlake himself, Nate "Danja" Hills, and Timothy "Timbaland" Mosley. The song is said to be about betrayal, forgiveness and this song received positive reviews from music critics.

This song is about forgiveness and betrayal. In my opinion I think that these lyrics are an expression of someone who is hurt and betrayed and the fact that it goes, ‘don’t want to think about it, I don’t want to talk about it’ shows that the pain and hurt that is going on is unbearable which will in turn set a dark atmosphere in the tone of voice of the singer and in the music video. The lyrics also presents some sort of regret in the air as the singer goes, ‘I should have known better when you came around, that you were going to make me cry and its breaking my heart to see you run around’.
The chorus is about indirect revenge for what the person who’s been betrayed and hurt meaning they are not going to do anything about the pain they’ve been through they will just sit back and watch the tables turn on the next person causing the pain as it goes, ‘what goes around comes around’.
We see in the picture the girl talking to the both of the guys, later on in the song the artist find the girl cheating on him with one of his friends which is the reason why the lyrics go like, ‘Is this the way it's really going down? Is this how we say goodbye?’ Because in some sense the singer didn’t think that the girl would do such a thing to cheat on him. In fact the artist left the girl in the hands of the friend who cheated with the girl when the artist when out of the room to where they were. There is so much confusion going on within as the lyrics says on the pre-chorus that, ‘Can't believe it's ending this way, Just so confused about it, Feeling the blues about it (yeah), I just can't do without you, Tell me is this fair?’ this presents the feeling that justice is lacking within the lyrics.

Conclusion

This research has helped us to know the theme of the song, It has helped to know what actions to put in place when the we are recording the artist. From this research we found out that the song is about betrayal and forgiveness which therefore helped us know what emotion we are to portray to the audience in the music recording and we have found out that in the music video we are to put in a down low feeling, a sad atmosphere so it can link with the lyrics. We also know what the artist should wear and what should take place in the music video due to the fact that we want to link the lyrics with the music video. We planned to use certain props for certain parts of the lyrics for an example when the song goes, ‘Now Girl I remember everything that you claimed You said that you were moving on now (on now) Maybe I should do the same (maybe I should do the same)’ we will show the artist walking about himself thinking to himself about what the girlfriend did to him.

Questionnaire

*Questionnaire Feedback*

Conclusion
Conducting this questionnaire proved to be an essential part of our planning for our initial music video as it helped us identify more clearly who our target audience was and what it was they expected and wanted from our music video . We will take into consideration the feedback our target audience has given us when we come to producing our music video as it is imperative in our production process. We plan to use the feedback by including some of their ideas in our actual music video, for example, someone suggested that as a way of improvement to our idea that we film the introduction of it in two separate bedrooms with each character in the separate rooms and we cut back and forth showing each of their actions

Second Team Meeting

In our second team meeting we discussed a range of things taking into consideration the feedback we received from our target audience from the questionnaire and mise en scene survey. The key topic of our discussion was the way in which we were going to match the lyrics and images on-screen to create meaning through the four key components. We also discussed how the use of lighting can have an effect on the mood and atmosphere of our music video.

Here is the video of our second team meeting...

Mise en Scene Survey

*Feedback*

1. What would be your choice of location for the first scene in the music video introduction?

2. For verse 1 of the song, would you rather a change in location from the introduction? If so where to.

The majority of people decided that it would be more convenient to have two separate locations for the introduction and verse 1 and the majority also thought that the location should be in a studio.

3. From then, do you think it would be suitable to cut the music video to a shot showing the artist walking alone on the road? Please state a reason for your answer.

Most of the audience agreed that it would be ideal to cut the music video at that point as they thought that it would be a good use of lyrical and image match, as the lyrics would match what was going on on-screen.

4. List the locations in which you think should be used within the opening scene of the music video.

These were the most common locations listed from the audience, but we found form the survey that the most popular location was the bathroom.

5. In terms of costume, which choice of clothing do you think would be suitable for the artist to wear in the introduction f the music video?

6. Choose from the list below the item(s) of clothing you think would be appropriate for the artist to be wearing in the second scene of the music video.

7. For the third scene of the music video we had the idea of showing the artist in a room performing the song. Which choice of clothing do you think would be suitable for the artist to wear at this point in the video?

8. We will be using flashbacks within our music video reflecting on the relationship the couple had with each other. What choice of clothing do you think should be worn by the artist at this point?

We received a variety of responses to this question regarding the outfit that should be worn by the artist, but the majority of the audience responded with 'jeans and a top'.

9. In the introduction of the music video the scene will be shot in a bedroom showing the artist getting up out of his bed. What items or props do you think should be used within this scene?

10. Which props do you think would be suitable to be used in a scene showing the artist walking alone along the road?
r

r 11. As the artist is walking alone, which time of day do you think would be best to shoot this scene in?

Focus Group

Introduction
Welcome and thanks for taking the time to join our discussion about our initial music video ideas. My name is Gemma and this is Tanya, we will serve as the facilitators for today’s focus group discussion. The purpose of today’s discussion is to get your opinions on our music video idea and to gather information on any thoughts and adjustments you may have to help us improve. You were all selected because you fit with the target audience we are creating our music video for. We will be recording this session and taking notes so that we can remember what each of you has contributed to this discussion.

We will begin this discussion by going around the room and introducing ourselves just so we know more about each other.

Topics of Discussion

·    As part of our A2 media coursework we have been assigned the task of choosing an already made music video and re-making it featuring lip sync to the already existing song. We have decided to use Justin Timberlake’s music video ‘What Goes Around Comes Around ‘, which is of the R&B/Pop genre. What do you think of this choice of music video and its genre?
·    Do you think re-making this music video is a good idea? If so why
·    As part of the coursework we have been set, we are required to use at least two or more locations within our music video. What locations do you think are suitable for this music video?

We are now going to show you the introduction of Justin Timberlake’s What Goes Around Comes Around.

·    As we are re-making this we have came up with an original idea for this regarding the action(s) that will take place, location, cast and costume and props, which is:

-     The scene opens with a close-up of the artist’s face, the camera then cuts to a long shot showing the bedroom with artist lying in the bed. From then there is a close-up of the alarm clock on the table. Then cuts to a long shot showing the artist getting out of bed. Artist then walks past the camera then cuts to a mid shot showing the artist looking in the mirror.

Chris Evans
Pitchfork Media

Dear, Mr. Evans
I am currently an A Level student at Codsall Community High School studying A2 Media. As part of my coursework I am required to re-make a music video of my choice using an already existing song. Therefore, I am writing to seek permission for use of Justin Timberlake’s ‘What Goes Around Comes Around’ soundtrack, which I intend on using alone.

Authorizing me to use this soundtrack is a substantial part of my A2 media coursework as it will contribute immensely to the production of my music video, which will be beneficial for my work.

Please indicate your approval of this permission by signing the letter where indicated below. Your signing of this letter will also be confirmation that your company owns the copyright to this material.

Thank you for your support and I hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,

Gemma Grant and Tanya Mlambo

Problem Solving

Throughout the planning and production process we would have to take into consideration any potential problems that we may come to face. These include problems such as the following:

Organisation

·         Permission to film in certain locations

We may need to get permission to shoot various scenes in certain locations and some people may not grant us that permission depending on the location, therefore we would have to make sure that we had other locations in mind just in case it doesn’t go to plan.

·         Time wasting on the shoot

We may not stay focused on what we have to do or even be positive on what we are doing, so we may end up wasting time that we need.

·         Pre-empting the weather

We need to make sure that we look ahead on weather forecast and check when the weather is suitable for us to shoot the music video in, because if we don’t we may find that the weather is not suitable for the scene we want to shoot; which would also mean more wasted time.

·         Teachers left in dark about changes to plans

We should be sure to notify our teacher of any changes we make to our plans so that she is up to date and knows exactly what we are doing and how we are doing it.

Communication

·         Not explaining yourself properly (being precise)

It’s imperative that when communicating with each other you explain yourself properly and be precise in what you are saying so that the people you are communicating to can fully understand the message you are trying to get across to them. It would be ideal to precisely plan out any ideas you have and be clear on them.

·         Not speaking up and saying how you feel

Throughout the production process there may be things that you may not agree with so you should be sure to speak up and make it known to one another so that it can be discussed between you and changed so that both of you agree and feel happy about it.

·         Full attention not given

Some people may get distracted i.e. texting people on their phones etc. so they wouldn’t be giving their full undivided attention to what is going on. As a resolution for this it would be a good idea to prioritise and set distinct goals on what you aim to achieve by the end of the session.

·         Last minute changes without full agreement

When shooting the music video people may come up with ideas and will want to change things last minute without everyone fully agreeing to it, so if this does happen it would be wiser to discuss the changes first and make sure everybody is happy with it before changing anything.

·         Not recording/notes/minutes/agreements on the blog

Not doing this could easily make you lose track of where you are and cause confusion. So I would recommend that someone is assigned the role of note taking, minutes etc. and updating the blog or keeping some form of notes of what is happening.

Technical Problems

·         Batteries not charged

We may forget to charge the battery for the camera, therefore it would be ideal to have one of us assigned to the job of making sure that it is charged for when we need it, and we could alternate roles to make it fair.

·         Poor lighting/sound/framing

When shooting scenes of our music video we may face problems relating to the sound, lighting or framing so we should make sure we have the correct equipment that we need to help us with the shoot.

·         Limited variety of shot distances, actions, movements

Again when shooting certain scenes of the music video we may be restricted to using a particular amount of space depending on the location, therefore we would have to consider this and make sure we have back up ideas of different but similar locations to use.

·         Shaky Camera

When shooting various scenes the camera may be shaky especially if we decide to use free hand, so we should make sure that we use the tripod when necessary for specific parts of the video.

Group Dynamics

·         Not sharing out the job roles equally and fairly

Not doing this could potentially lead to arguments which would then lead to wasted time, so it is important that all job roles are shared out equally between one another so that you are each doing the same amount of work and no one can complain about it.

·         Not compromising

It’s important to make sure that we listen to each other’s ideas and take them into consideration when it comes to making the final decision, that way we each will have had a say and each of our ideas will be used in the production process.

·         Not tackling issues within the group as they arise

If we come to face issues and leave them to sort out at a later date rather than sorting them out as soon as they occur we may find that the issue gets worse, so it makes more sense and is easier to tackle them as they arise.

Andrew Goodwin's Theory Application

Throughout our music video there is a relationship between visuals, lyrics and the music.  For an example, the song initially is about betrayal, hurt and pain therefore in support of this we have decided to use low key lighting of the artist walking alone on the road and maybe whilst its raining as the song goes…
‘Is this the way it's really going down?
Is this how we say goodbye?
Should've known better when you came around
That you were gonna make me cry
It's breaking my heart to watch you run around
'Cause I know that you're living a lie
That's okay baby 'cause in time you will find...’

We find that the artist is going through hard times when he is regretting things that he did which he shouldn’t have done so him walking alone on the road implies that he is now lonely, sad and depressed about the situation.  The fact that it is low key lighting works in support of the dark times that he is going through which is supported by the lyrics as the song also goes

‘Don't want to think about it
Don't want to talk about it
I'm just so sick about it
Can't believe it's ending this way
Just so confused about it
Feeling the blues about it
I just can't do without ya
Can you tell me is this fair?’
In support of this we decided that the artist should wear dark clothes which works in support of making it connotes the sad, hard painful times that he is going through.  We have also added a performance side rather than just having narrative but the performance is based on the narrative.

There are several close ups of the artist throughout the music video for an example when he is in the studio recording the song, (singing to the microphone). This helps to express the emotions of the artist which helps in making the audience relate to the artist which create the relationship once again between the artist and the audience.

There is a part in the music video where the on the audience during the performance time is staring at the artist like he is looking through him. We are going to use a deep focus to show the girl in the audience looking at the artist.  However the voyeuristic treatment of the female body is not applicable to our music video. The theory of our music video having a narrative at the same also having a performance relates more to music videos however the concept of betrayal links to the film Face Off at the opening of the film when the child was shot by the friend’s dad. In the opening of Face Off, the dad goes through hurt and pain because his child got shot by friend which relates to our music video as the artist is hurt, in pain and is betrayed by his girlfriend.

Our music video genre is RnB/Pop which contains either narrative or performance as codes and conventions. However our music video is a mixture of the narrative and performance. The style of our music video is a sad low mood therefore one of the codes and conventions are close ups which focus on the musicians as their mouths move to the lyrics as well as when there is a narrative and there are close ups on the characters to show their emotions, which suit what the song is about.  Cuts are one of the codes and conventions of an RnB/pop genre and these are used throughout the music video to show the tension.  There are props such as the microphone for the performance part of the music video. The clothes in a music video matters and it crucial that they suit the style music video in this case the clothes will be dark for color and casual for the narrative but formal for the performance. The location is in the studio, this implies the fact that the artist wants to express his feelings through the (recording) of the music. All these work together to set of the genre of the music video and the examples above is how they meet them.
